Well there is and it's called dry shampoo. A dry shampoo soaks up excess oil (that makes hair greasy) between shampoos, giving longer life to hairstyles or simply providing a way to freshen up.
Some dry shampoos available, like normal shampoos, have harmful ingredients in them that you may want to avoid using like propane and isobutane. Alcohols, some of which can be drying, also tend to be included to soak up any oily or greasy patches. With frequent use, commercial dry shampoos may leave your hair dry and more prone to breakage.
Rather than spend money on another product, you can make a dry shampoo very simply with only a couple of ingredients and make it safer as well! You can choose between arrowroot, corn flour or clay as the main oil absorber. However arrowroot is better because it is harvested from the tubers of its plant without the use of harsh chemicals or high heat. Plus, arrowroot is full of nutrients. You can also make a combination for your dry shampoo.
You can add essential oils to the mix for some extra benefits to the hair, but also for a nice aroma and avoiding synthetic and harmful fragrances. Lavender has antimicrobial benefits and Peppermint is energising for the scalp. You could also try oils like Tea Tree, Ylang Ylang, Geranium or Rosemary.
If you have darker hair, you can add Cacao powder to the mix to reduce the grey tones. If you have black hair, try charcoal but only a small amount at a time. If you have red hair, try cinnamon. It is easy to make your own dry shampoo:
What you need:
2 Tablespoons of your chosen powder/s
What you do:
Mix ingredients until smooth. You may need to press the essential oils into the powder with the back of a spoon to ensure they distribute evenly. Store in an airtight container.
How to use:
To apply to your hair: You can use your fingertips, a large makeup brush, or a shaker. Gently dust the dry shampoo onto your scalp. Don't apply too much! If you really want to hide any evidence of the product, brush it underneath the layers of your hair. Massage it into your roots. This will evenly distribute the mixture and help the ingredients absorb into hair strands. Brush or comb the powder through your hair. This especially help if you’ve accidentally applied too much.
You will probably find you need to wash your hair after approximately 3 applications.
