"Humans make thousands of units of Vitamin D within minutes of whole body exposure to sunlight. From what we know of nature, it is unlikely such a system happened by chance"
John J Cannell MD, Vitamin D Council
During this current situation, many people are looking for ways to support their health and immune system. One thing that has sadly been lacking in most of the discussions in the media and from officials is simple, natural ways you can improve your health. Some simple things you can do is eat organic wholefoods like fruit and vegetables and cut out sugar, supplement with high quality and high dose vitamin C, cut out toxins you are exposed to and move your body, ideally outside. Why outside? Because if you are outside in the sun, you will be be exposing yourself to the best way to access Vitamin D - The Sun!
In the 1980's the medical industry began telling everyone that the sun was dangerous. Before this sun scare, 90% of human Vitamin D stores came through skin production, not diet. We were constantly told that the sun can kill you, and we are still reminded of this these days. Don't get us wrong, sitting out and baking in the sun is not a smart thing to do, BUT avoiding all sun exposure limits your body's ability to manufacture Vitamin D in the most efficient way - which is essential for you health and well-being.
TIP - It can take up to 48 hours for Vitamin D to penetrate the skin. Avoid having a shower with soap after sun exposure as Vitamin D is oil-soluble and broken down by soap.
Vitamin D can help with some of the following:
You can get Vitamin D from some food sources like fish and eggs, but not nearly enough - you need sunlight. You can benefit from supplementation, but you will not likely get enough vitamin D through food and supplementation alone.
Having limited sunlight exposure is one of the leading causes of Vitamin D deficiency. It is important to remember that without enough sunlight, our skin cannot begin the chain of events that results in Vitamin D creation in your body.
Allowing your body to carry out the processes it was meant to will often solve the problem of Vitamin D deficiency. Making a conscious effort to safely expose yourself to sunlight and include a Vitamin D supplement at the appropriate dose will help you cover your bases.
Depending on where you live this time of year (winter& Spring) can be great to get out into the sun to get some Vitamin D without being exposed to harsh sunlight. It is also possible to spend short times safely in the sun during summer to increase your Vitamin D intake. I (Reeda) know that I do not spend enough time out in the sun and would be wise to increase that. Brad on the other hand gets out into the sun regularly.
But don't take our word for it! Do some research on Vitamin D and the benefits and how you can improve your body's absorption of it in a safe, smart way.
What is your favourite way to spend time in the sun?
